On March 21, 1980, in the popular evening TV drama Dallas, main character JR Ewing was shot twice by an unknown gunman. The cliffhanger came on the heels of a season where JR (played by Larry Hagman) had angered most of the city.

The episode spurred a nationwide question of “Who Shot JR?” and an explosion of T-shirt sales emblazoned with “I Shot JR.”

Not since the JFK Assassination had such speculation surrounded a mysterious shooter.
