48 Years Ago, Beatles Land at JFK Airport – February 7, 1964
February 6th, 2012
Forty-eight years ago, on February 7, 1964, the Beatles landed at JFK airport on their way to debut on the Ed Sullivan Show. Although their single “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” was already a hit in the US, the impromptu reception of three thousand screaming fans greeting their plane seemed to surprise and delight the Fab Four. Little did they know it was only the beginning.
Less than three months had passed since the shocking assassination of President John F. Kennedy. In honor of the slain president, the airport had recently been renamed JFK from its former moniker, Idlewild.
