51 Years Ago, JFK Appoints Burke Marshall as AAG for Civil Rights
February 2nd, 2012
51 years ago today, John F. Kennedy and his brother, Attorney General Robert Kennedy, appointed Burke Marshall as Assistant Attorney General. He was given the daunting task of heading up the Civil Rights Division during the tumultuous 60s.
According to the JFK Library, “Mr. Marshall played an integral role in the 1961 ban on segregation in interstate travel and the integration of the University of Mississippi. He also helped shape legislation for the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964.”
