The Martin Agency created this poster series to celebrate the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s first year in office. To commemorate the diversity of the key events from that single tumultuous year, each poster incorporated the same photo of JFK, overprinted with a different woodblock illustration.
As one of his first presidential acts, Kennedy asked Congress to create the Peace Corps. Through this program, Americans volunteer to help underdeveloped nations in areas such as education, farming, health care, and construction.
Space Race — JFK challenged Americans to send a human to the moon and back before the end of the decade. Apollo 11 achieved this in 1969.
Kennedy began sparring with Fidel Castro in April of 1961 by executing the Bay of Pigs Invasion. CIA-backed Cuban exiles were sent in to overthrow Castro’s regime. However, he reneged on promised US Air Force support, and the operation failed.
In their Vienna summit meeting in June 1961, Russian Premier Khrushchev and President Kennedy reached an informal understanding against nuclear testing.
