Philly’s Love Park, Officially JFK Plaza, Undergoing Renovations
LOVE Park, the symbolic heart of Philadelphia officially known as John F. Kennedy Plaza, is expected to undergo a $20 million renovation starting in 2013.
Mayor Nutter will announce the plans for the iconic park, a destination for tourists and skateboarders from around the world, in his budget address Thursday morning, several sources said.
Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculpture is slated to remain.
A Tony Hawk video game that featured LOVE Park lured skateboarders from around the world, but a city crackdown that began about 10 years ago has significantly reduced their presence.
In recent years, food trucks serving gourmet tacos and burgers with elaborate toppings, along with musical performers and a farmers’ market in warm weather, have helped turn LOVE Park into a gathering spot for locals as well as tourists.
