But designer Karl Lagerfeld claims that the iconic suit, long thought to be a Chanel creation, was a fake. He purports it was a “line-by-line copy by [Oleg] Cassini.”
There exists another theory, that the ensemble was created from a Chanel design, but it was made by the Chez Ninon dress shop in New York. The rationale being that after being criticized for buying outlandishly expensive designer clothing, Mrs. Kennedy wanted to save on costs, as well as support the American (rather than French) economy.
The suit, according to an LA Times article, is now “perfectly preserved in a vault in Maryland…banned from public display for 100 years.”
